All postdocs, clinical fellows and 'final year' PhD students from the NKI-AvL, the Academic Medical Center (UvA), the VU University Medical Center and the Hubrecht Institute are invited to join the annual Postdoc Retreat. During the three day retreat the position and future of postdocs is discussed.
The 5th postdoc retreat 'Making the Right Moves' was held from 5-7 October at hotel Zuiderduin in Egmond.
The 2005 committee consisted of the following enthusiastic people:

Science Session
After the welcome address by Peter Peters, an exciting keynote lecture followed. María Blasco, a young and successful spanish scientist, not only told about the successes in her career, but also about the choices she had to make, and about how she manages to get her research funded.
Workshops
As part of the session Mentoring and being mentored, project- and time-management, getting published the retreat participants had the opportunity to participate in two workshops in conjunction with professional trainers. One could choose from four different tracks and pick the most suitable ones for their current or future situation.
Too little time, too much work? That can change! Who does not recognize this: 'busy, busy, busy', long days, too many experiments, too many meetings, people asking 'short' questions all the time, manuscripts to write and papers to read. As a consequence you make mistakes, get irritated, don't meet deadlines and feel overworked.
Your productivity, peace of mind, quality of work, internal and external satisfaction are under pressure... and the pressure increases rather than decreases.
Workshop leaders:
drs. Charlotte de Lange and drs. Karin Peperkamp (Impulsus, Personal Quality and Results)
Working together to reach higher goals. It's all about feedback!
Few of us enjoy hearing about our shortcomings. Even fewer of us look forward to describing them to colleagues or staff. Yet, the only way for people to get better at what they do, is to receive feedback on their performance and behaviour. Feedback matters!
In this workshop you will learn how to tell your co-workers or lab members, in a constructive way, that their behaviour does not meet your expectations or maybe more importantly, that they are doing well and that they should keep up the good work.
Workshop leaders:
drs. Marie-Claire Dassen (De Galan & Voigt)
Managing projects - Staying focused, committed and inspired in the face of too many distractions
Performing successful projects in science needs much more managing than one might think. Expectations about the results and delivery time may vary depending on whom you ask (your promoter, the Department Head, NWO, your colleagues overseas, your partner).
In this workshop, we will first explore the force field in which scientific projects take place. Who are the stakeholders, what are their needs and what are your options for exerting influence in a direction that you believe is right? Next, we consider motivation and inspiration: what drives you and what drives your project members? Is it possible to improve their level of commitment?
The workshop has an experimential character: after a brief introduction, we will spend most of our time exchanging experiences in small groups and reflecting on new strategies for handling your own project.
Workshop leader:
drs. Freerk Wortelboer (De Galan & Voigt)
