Second Mac User Meeting NKI-AVL
After our previous Mac User Group Meeting, we had our second meeting at the NKI-AVL for Mac-Users in the institute on Thursday January 20th. The meeting was organized by the Dienst Automatisering (IT-department) and included presentation by Mek and Tosj on: mekentosj.com, Mac OS X & Powerpoint Tips & Tricks, and Science made easy, an introduction to AppleScript.
Mekentosj.com
PhotoThe first presentation was by Alexander (Mek) Griekspoor and was about the past, present and future of mekentosj. Alexander talked about how the mekentosj duo was formed at the Free University in 1995, about us having no programming experience at all until 2001, and about our scientific programs: LabAssistant, EnzymeX, iRNAi, and 4Peaks. With some 'sale statistics' of our programs and the people we worked with and gotten support from in these days, he finished with sneak previews of the soon to be released program updates for 4Peaks and EnzymeX. | Download PDF >>
Mac OS X & Powerpoint: Tips & Tricks
The second presentation was by Tom (Tosj) Groothuis and was named Mac OS X & PowerPoint: Tips & tricks. Tom showed around multiple shortcut keys of the OS and in addition to this also some interesting facts, tips and tricks about PowerPoint. Did you know you could set a transparency color for your pictures? An easy way to get rid of nasty white borders around your images. Further more, Tom showed the new Dasboard movie from the internet site of Apple. He encouraged people to get into contact if they have a good idea for a scientific Widget. One example was the sneak preview of his WeightWatchWidget, a simple calculator to get the Volume you need for a solution with a given Weight, Molecular Weigt and Molarity. The presentation ended with some useful links. | Download PDF >>
An introduction to AppleScript
After some questions, it was time for Alexander's second presentaion, dealing with a simple introduction to AppleScript. AppleScript is a very easy 'language', it isn't a normal programming language, because it actually is almost English. Alexander explained how you can win time and prevent possible RSI during repetitive handling with for example data analysis. AppleScripting will get a new dimension in Tiger with the Automator capabilities of the nex OS. Then AppleScripting will become even more easy, but until then, have a look at the PDF file of his presentation for an introduction to AppleScript. | Download PDF >>
